Electronic Ignition or Match Lit? The Propane-Tank Rule Nobody Tells You
Four words on page three of the spec sheet decide whether your fire table needs a plumber. Here is the rule, in plain English, before you choose a variant.
Almost every guide to buying a gas fire table will tell you to choose between propane and natural gas. Almost none of them tell you about the second choice sitting right next to it β the ignition system β or that the two choices are not independent. Get the combination wrong and you will not find out on the product page. You will find out when a 300-pound table is standing on your patio and it will not light.
Here is the rule, stated exactly as the manufacturer states it on the fire tables we sell:
Electronic ignition burners require a fixed piping gas supply. They are not for use with a portable LP tank.
Read that twice, because it is counter-intuitive. You can order an electronic ignition burner configured for propane. Propane is one of the fuel options. But "configured for propane" means fed by a permanent propane supply β a buried tank with a regulated line run to the table β not the 20-pound exchange cylinder you were planning to hide in the base.
If your mental picture of this purchase involves swapping a tank at the hardware store, you want match lit. That is the whole article in one sentence. The rest of this explains why, and what each choice actually costs you in convenience.
What the two ignition systems actually are
Strip away the marketing and there are only two ways a gas fire table starts.
Match lit is mechanical. You insert a key into a valve, turn it to release gas, and light the burner yourself with a long lighter. There is no circuit board, no battery, no wiring β nothing between you and the gas but a brass valve. It is the same principle as a gas barbecue you light by hand.
Electronic ignition is powered. You press a button or use a remote, and a control module opens the valve and sparks the burner automatically. It is more pleasant to use on a cold evening, and it is the configuration most people picture when they imagine a modern fire feature. It also introduces two hard requirements that match lit does not have: mains electricity at the table, and a permanent gas line.
Match lit β what it needs
- No electricity at all
- Runs from a portable propane tank, or a fixed line if you have one
- A 3/8″ × 144″ hose and regulator, ordered separately
- You light it yourself with a long lighter each time
- The table can be repositioned without re-plumbing anything
Electronic ignition β what it needs
- 120VAC at the table β a grounded outdoor cord into a GFCI outlet
- The GFCI outlet itself is not supplied with the table
- A fixed piping gas supply. No portable tank, on either fuel
- Push-button or remote lighting
- Substantially higher heat output on most models
The heat difference is not small
This is the part that surprises people who assumed ignition was purely a convenience feature. On the concrete tables we carry, every match lit burner runs at 65,000 BTU. The electronic ignition version of the same table runs considerably hotter β and how much hotter depends entirely on which table you pick.

Figures are the manufacturer's published output for each ignition configuration, listed on every product page. Output is one input into placement and clearance β it is not a comfort rating.
A Sonoma 72 more than doubles its output when you move from match lit to electronic ignition. That is a genuine difference in how the table performs on a cold night β and it is also a genuine difference in the clearances the table needs, which is why we treat that as its own subject rather than a footnote here.
Why the tank restriction exists
It would be easy to read the restriction as an arbitrary manufacturer preference. It is not. An electronic ignition system has to sense that it has lit, hold a flame, and shut itself down safely if it has not. That safety logic assumes a steady, regulated supply pressure. A portable exchange cylinder does not deliver that reliably across a full burn β pressure falls as the tank empties and as ambient temperature drops, which is exactly when you are using it.
So the restriction is not "this will not work". It is "this will work until it does not, in a system whose whole job is to fail safe". Manufacturers write that as a flat prohibition because there is no partial version of it.
The one combination to avoid
- Electronic Ignition + Propane + a portable tank. This is the configuration that looks right on the order form and is wrong in the yard.
- Electronic ignition on propane is valid only with a permanent, regulated propane supply.
- If a portable cylinder is your plan, the correct choice is Match Lit · Propane.
- Match lit propane still needs a 3/8″ × 144″ hose and regulator, ordered separately from the table. Ask us before ordering — some parts are sourced locally to the manufacturer's specification.
Choosing, in the right order
The mistake is choosing the ignition first because one sounds nicer. Choose the location first, then let the utilities at that location choose the ignition for you.
Pick the spot
Decide exactly where the table will live β not roughly. The answer to everything below depends on it.
Is there a gas line?
A fixed natural gas or permanent propane line at that spot is the gate for electronic ignition. No line, no electronic ignition.
Is there an outlet?
Electronic ignition needs 120VAC into a grounded GFCI outdoor outlet. The outlet is not supplied with the table.
Will it ever move?
If you want the freedom to reposition it, match lit on a portable tank is the only configuration that lets you.
Price the trades
Get the plumber and electrician quotes before you order, not after. They frequently cost more than the difference between two tables.
Then order
With those four answers, the variant picks itself β and you will not be paying to send anything back.
What it costs to get this wrong
We want to be straightforward about this, because it is the reason we wrote the article. These tables ship by LTL freight and they are heavy. If you order the wrong configuration and need to send it back, a return on this category carries a restocking fee of 20–30%, and the freight is not free in either direction. On a table in the $6,000 range that is a four-figure mistake, and it is entirely avoidable with one phone call before you order.
We would genuinely rather spend ten minutes on the phone confirming your gas and power situation than process that return. One more thing about installation
Whichever ignition you choose, the gas connection itself is not a DIY step. The enclosure, burner and valve arrive already assembled β you are not building furniture. But the manufacturer requires the gas connection to be made by a certified gas technician, and where electronic ignition is involved, the 120VAC outlet must be installed and grounded in accordance with your local codes. Budget for both trades as part of the project rather than as a surprise at the end of it.
It is also worth noting precisely what is certified on these tables: the published certification is a CSA/US Approved Burner Assembly. That approval attaches to the burner assembly, not to the concrete enclosure around it. That distinction matters when you are comparing spec sheets across brands, because it is not always drawn as clearly elsewhere.
