How Much Overhead Clearance Does a Gas Fire Table Actually Need?
Most answers online give you a range and no source. Here is the published figure for the tables we sell, the second condition everyone forgets, and how to measure your own patio.
Search this question and you will get a range: seven feet, eight feet, ten feet, "check your manual". Almost none of those answers tell you where the number came from, and none of them can, because the honest answer is that the requirement belongs to the specific table you are buying. A manufacturer sets it, publishes it, and it is the only figure that governs your patio.
So rather than add another range to the pile, here is the figure the manufacturer publishes for the concrete fire tables we sell — and, just as importantly, the second condition that sits beside it and that most articles never mention at all.
Permitted at 84″ overhead clearance, with solid structure or combustible material on no more than two sides.
Eighty-four inches is seven feet, measured from the top surface of the table to the underside of whatever is above it. That is the number. But notice that it is only half the requirement — and the half people skip is the half that disqualifies most of the locations we get asked about.
The condition everyone misses
"Solid structure or combustible material on no more than two sides" is a ventilation rule. A gas fire feature produces heat and combustion products, and they need somewhere to go. Height alone does not guarantee that. A table with ten feet of clearance sitting in a three-walled alcove is worse ventilated than the same table under a seven-foot pergola with open sides.
Height moves heat up. Open sides move it away. You need both, and the second one is the one people forget to check.
When you count sides, count everything solid around the table's footprint — not just walls. House walls count. Solid privacy fencing counts. A tall solid screen counts. Built-in seating with a solid back counts. If more than two of the four sides are enclosed, that spot does not meet the requirement, no matter how generous the headroom is.
Usually works
- An open pergola with a high crossbeam and all four sides open
- A patio against one house wall, otherwise open
- A corner with two solid sides and two open sides
- An open-sided gazebo with genuine headroom above the table
Usually does not
- A three-walled alcove or recessed porch corner
- Under a low soffit, balcony underside or first-floor overhang
- A screened porch enclosed on three or four sides
- Tight against solid fencing on two sides plus the house on a third
None of that is a substitute for measuring. It is a way of forming an expectation before you get the tape out.
How to check your own space in five minutes
Mark the footprint
Put the table's actual dimensions on the ground with tape or chalk. Every product page lists them.
Measure to the underside
From the table's top surface, not from the ground, straight up to the lowest thing above it — beam, soffit or ceiling.
Find the lowest point
Measure the lowest obstruction over the footprint, not the average. A single low beam sets your number.
Count solid sides
Walls, solid fencing, screens, solid-backed seating. More than two enclosed sides rules the spot out.
Check the surface
What is underneath matters separately — see the decking section below.
Compare to the spec
Against the published requirement for your exact model and configuration. If it is close, call us.
Measure from the table, not the ground
- Clearance is measured from the top of the table upward, so the table's own height is already subtracted.
- Use the lowest obstruction over the footprint. Sloped ceilings and single low beams decide it.
- Anything you might add later — a shade sail, a retractable awning, a hanging light — counts too.
- If your measurement is within a few inches of the requirement, treat it as a no and call us before ordering.
Does a higher BTU need more clearance?
It is a reasonable instinct, and heat output is genuinely one of the inputs a manufacturer uses when setting these requirements. But you should never work backwards from a BTU number to a clearance yourself. Use the published requirement for the exact model and configuration you are ordering.
Configuration matters here more than most buyers expect, because on these tables the ignition system changes the heat output substantially — the same table can more than double its output depending on which version you order:

Decks, composite boards and what is underneath
Overhead clearance and ground surface are two different questions, and both have to be answered before a table goes on a deck. They also have two different authorities.
The fire table manufacturer decides whether that surface is permitted and whether a protective barrier is required beneath the table. Your decking manufacturer decides, entirely separately, whether a fire feature may sit on their boards at all, and what they require if so. Composite decking in particular publishes its own heat tolerances, and those are set by the decking maker — a fire table's spec sheet has no authority over them and cannot grant permission on their behalf.
There is a third question people forget: load. These are concrete tables and they are heavy for their size. On an older or lightly framed deck, the weight is worth a conversation with whoever built it before the table arrives, not after.
