Why it matters

Water is what actually damages a fire pit.

Rain and condensation collect in an uncovered pit and sit in the media and the pan. Light it before it has dried and that trapped water turns to steam — which is what makes lava rock burst and what shortens the life of a burner.

A fitted cover is the least expensive thing on this site and it protects the most expensive.

What is the difference between a weather cover and a burner cover?

A weather cover goes over the whole table and keeps rain out. A burner cover is a glass panel that sits over the burner opening so the table is usable as a table when the fire is off.

They are sized differently — one to the table, one to the burner — so they are not alternatives to each other. Plenty of people own both.

Do I really need one?

If the fire pit lives outdoors uncovered, yes. Water collecting in the pan and the media is the main thing that damages a fire pit between seasons, and it is entirely preventable.

Can I leave the cover on all winter?

That is what it is for. Make sure the pit is cool and reasonably dry before you cover it, so you are not sealing moisture in.
