Choosing

Four decisions, in the order they actually matter.

Shape and size get chosen first and matter least. Fuel and ignition get chosen last and decide what your installer has to do.

  • First

    Fuel decides the install

Natural gas is permanent and means a line run to the spot, but it never runs out and supports the higher outputs. Propane can run off a buried tank or, on some models, a portable one. Check the product page β€” not every model accepts a portable tank.

  • Second

    Ignition decides the price

Match lit is the cheapest way in and needs no electrician. Electronic ignition adds push-button start, a remote on most models, and usually a higher rated output β€” though on some copper bowls it is unchanged, so check the page. It needs a 120V outdoor receptacle at the pit. HPC also offers a middle tier: battery push-button ignition at full output, with no mains run.

  • Third

    Material decides how it reads

Concrete reads as built rather than placed and sits beside stone and rendered walls without arguing. Powder-coated steel reads as one clean object. Copper is the one that changes over time.

  • Fourth

    Size decides where people sit

A 20-inch bowl is an accent beside two chairs. A 72-inch rectangle is the thing a terrace is arranged around. Measure the seating circle before you measure the pit.

Before you order

The questions we actually get.

Propane or natural gas?

Natural gas needs a line run to the spot and is permanent, but it never runs out and supports the higher outputs. Propane is more flexible.

One thing worth knowing: several models require a fixed piping supply and cannot run from a portable tank. Where that applies it is stated on the product page under Fuel supply.

Do I need an installer?

The gas connection is a licensed installer's job rather than a weekend one. Your installer will want the model's rated output to size the gas line, which is published on every product page here.

Electronic ignition models also need a 120V outdoor receptacle at the pit, grounded to local code β€” worth quoting both together.

Can it go under a pergola or an overhang?

Sometimes, and it depends on the model's rated output. The manufacturer's rule and the overhead figure are printed on every product page rather than left to you to find in a manual.

The general shape of it: an overhead structure with solid material on no more than two sides, at the published overhead clearance. If your model cannot, the page says so.

How does it arrive, and what do I do on the day?

Freight, kerbside, on a lift-gate truck. The carrier calls to arrange a window and someone needs to be there to receive and sign.

Inspect the crate before you sign. Photograph anything that looks wrong and note it on the delivery receipt β€” then call us before the driver leaves. On some of these lines the manufacturer wants visibly damaged freight refused rather than accepted, so the right answer depends on the model and we would rather give it to you on the phone than in a paragraph.

Either way, report it the same day. The reporting windows on freight damage are short and a late report can end a claim.
