Almost Heaven vs Golden Designs: An Honest Comparison
We're an authorized Golden Designs dealer and we don't stock Almost Heaven. Which is exactly why we'll tell you where they beat us.
Let's get the awkward bit out of the way first: we sell Golden Designs. We do not sell Almost Heaven. You are therefore entitled to assume this article is about to explain, at length, why the brand we happen to stock is superior in every measurable respect.
It isn't, and we'd rather say so. Almost Heaven publishes a better structural warranty than we can offer on our range, and if that's your deciding factor you should probably buy one. What follows is the genuine comparison, including the several places where the answer isn't us.
Who actually makes what
Almost Heaven Saunas has been building barrel and cabin saunas in the Greenbrier Valley of West Virginia since 1977, and joined the Finnish Harvia group in 2019 — which is why you'll usually find Harvia heaters in their cabins. Their range centres on traditional saunas in Western Red Cedar and Nordic Spruce. You'll see them at Costco, and through various online dealers.
Golden Designs is the manufacturer behind three lines we carry as an authorized dealer: Golden Designs itself, Dynamic (the value line — same manufacturer, same core construction) and Maxxus. Between them they span far infrared, full spectrum, hybrid, traditional cabins and barrels, from one to eight people. So the first honest observation is that these two aren't quite competitors across the board. One is a traditional-sauna specialist with nearly fifty years in one craft. The other is a broad-range manufacturer whose biggest strength is covering every category, including the one Almost Heaven largely doesn't play in.
The warranty, where they win
This is the comparison people should be making and mostly aren't, so here it is plainly.

A limited lifetime structural warranty is a meaningful commitment and it is better than ours. We're not going to dress that up. If you are buying one sauna, intend to keep it for twenty years, and want the longest possible cover on the shell, that's a legitimate reason to choose Almost Heaven over anything we sell.
Any dealer who can't name a single thing a competitor does better is not comparing. They're selling.
Two fair caveats, and they apply to every brand including ours. "Limited lifetime" always has terms — read what counts as a manufacturing defect, what's excluded, and what's required of you to keep cover valid. And warranty terms change; confirm the current wording with whoever you buy from rather than trusting an article, this one included.
The real dividing line: do you want infrared?
Here's the question that settles this for most people, and it has nothing to do with brand loyalty.
If you want traditional heat
Stove, rocks, water, steam, 150–195°F. Both brands make good ones. Almost Heaven has the longer specialist heritage and the stronger structural warranty; our Golden Designs barrels run $5,099 to $7,099 with published stove sizes and shipping weights. Compare the specific models on capacity, wood and stove size — not the badge.
If you want infrared
This isn't really a comparison. Infrared cabins warm your body directly at 110–140°F, most plug into a standard outlet, and they start at $1,499 rather than five thousand. Almost Heaven isn't the natural alternative here — the honest comparison is between infrared brands.
If you're not sure yet

Buying at Costco versus buying from a dealer
Because a lot of people meet Almost Heaven for the first time in a Costco listing, it's worth noting that the retailer question is separate from the brand question — and the two get tangled constantly.
Costco's return policy is genuinely excellent and better than ours; we've said so before in our Costco sauna review. What a dealer adds is the part that happens earlier: published specs, someone who knows the electrical requirement answering the phone, and guidance on freight inspection when 600 pounds of cedar arrives on a lorry. You can buy an excellent Almost Heaven sauna from Costco. You can also buy an excellent Golden Designs barrel from us. The failure mode in both cases is identical: not checking the circuit requirement, the shipping weight, or the route through the garden before ordering.
So who should buy which?
Almost Heaven, if
- The longest structural warranty is your priority
- US manufacturing matters to you
- You want a traditional barrel or cabin specifically
- You like the Harvia heater pairing
- You're buying through Costco and value the return policy
Golden Designs / Dynamic / Maxxus, if
- You want infrared, full spectrum or hybrid
- Your budget starts nearer $1,499 than $5,000
- You want one supplier across every sauna type
- You want published EMF ratings per model
- You want a dealer to talk to before and after the sale
Compare these five things, whichever you choose
- Warranty length and what it excludes — especially wood, and especially the heater.
- Stove size and circuit — 6kW usually means 240V/30A, 8kW means 240V/40A. Price the electrician first.
- Shipping weight — anything over ~500 lbs is kerbside freight, not a doorstep delivery.
- Who honours the warranty — manufacturer, retailer, or a third-party vendor.
- Published EMF rating, if you're buying infrared. If it isn't published, ask why.
Get those five answers and you'll make a good decision regardless of which logo ends up in your garden. We'd rather you bought the right sauna than our sauna — partly because it's the decent thing, and partly because nobody has ever recommended a dealer who talked them into the wrong cabin.
