Barrel, Cabin or Barn? How to Choose an Outdoor Sauna for Your Home

An outdoor sauna changes a garden. It becomes a destination at the end of the path, a reason to be outside in January, and — for many owners — the best-used thing they have ever bought for the house. It is also a small building, with a foundation, a power supply and a relationship with the weather, and the choices you make about shape and siting last as long as the wood does.

This guide compares the three shapes of outdoor traditional sauna — barrel, cabin and barn — using the manufacturer's published specifications for the outdoor models we sell. It starts with the rule most buyers learn too late.

Rule one: "outdoor" is a specification, not a location

Plenty of saunas can stand outside the house. Far fewer are built to stand in the weather. The difference is written into the warranty text, and it is the most important thing on this page:

So an indoor cabin on an open patio is not an outdoor sauna, however sheltered the corner. If the sauna will live under the sky, start from the outdoor-rated models. The three shapes, compared

Barrel

A horizontal cylinder of cedar staves held by bands. The barrels we sell are built in Pacific Premium Cedar with a bronze privacy glass door, and they are the lightest and most affordable outdoor traditional saunas in the range: $5,099 to $7,099, with assembled weights of roughly 410 to 550 lb. Cabin

A square or rectangular building with a pitched or flat roof. The Arlberg and Vorarlberg cabins are built in Canadian Hemlock with a waterproof stain on the exterior, an 8kW stove and exterior roof accent lighting, from $6,099 to $8,099. A step up, the Narvik, Drammen and Bergen use an all-weather exterior with a Canadian Red Cedar interior, from $12,099 to $16,099. Cabins give you upright walls, more usable headroom and a more architectural look.

Barn

The largest shape: a cabin with a tall barn-style roof and an all-weather exterior over a Canadian Red Cedar interior. The Savonlinna (3-person) and Kaarina (6-person) run $14,099 to $16,099, and they are genuinely heavy — about 1,185 and 1,425 lb assembled. This is the shape for a statement building at the bottom of the garden.

Sizing: two, four or six people

Two sizing habits save regret. Treat the capacity figure as people sitting close — if two adults want to lie down, look at a 3- or 4-person model. And plan the footprint with the outside dimensions plus room to open the door and walk around the building for maintenance, not just the pad the sauna sits on.

Power: every one of these is a 240V job

All the outdoor traditional saunas above use an electric stove on a dedicated 240V circuit, plus a separate 120V, 15-amp supply for the lights and music. As a rule of thumb from the specifications, the 6kW stoves call for a 30-amp circuit and the 8kW stoves a 40-amp circuit — but read the electrical line on the exact model, because that is the figure your electrician will work to.

The manufacturer's instruction is to consult a certified electrician. Base, weather and wood

Assembled weights on the outdoor range run from about 409 lb (St. Moritz) to 1,425 lb (Kaarina). Every one needs a level, solid base, and the warranty lists placement on non-approved surfaces among the conditions that void cover — so build the base to the installation manual for your model rather than improvising.

The warranty, read in full

Golden Designs headlines its cover as a Limited Lifetime Warranty. Read the text on the specific product rather than relying on the headline, because it sets real limits. On the St. Moritz, for example, the fine print defines the lifetime term as 5 years on the wood structure (when properly maintained), control panel and its harnesses and lights, with the stove covered separately under its own manufacturer's warranty. Across the range the cover is for parts rather than labour, applies to the original purchaser at the original installation site, and ends if the sauna is sold or relocated — which matters more for a building in the garden than for most purchases.
