The Hottest Propane Fire Pit Tables, Ranked by BTU

What "hottest" really means, every fire table we sell ranked from 225,000 BTU down, and the propane-tank rule that caps how much heat a table on a 20 lb cylinder can give you.

Outdoor GreatRoom Monte Carlo linear gas fire pit table with the burner lit

Search for the hottest propane fire pit and most of what comes back is portable pits for camping, rated up to about 62,000 BTU. A fire table is a different animal. The tables we sell run from 55,000 BTU to 225,000 BTU, nearly four times as much gas through the burner. Whether you can have that much heat, though, depends almost entirely on one thing: where the propane comes from.

The short answer: the hottest fire table we sell is the HPC Agni 60, at up to 225,000 BTU with its Torpedo burner and electronic or hi/low ignition, on a fixed gas line. The hottest that runs from a hidden 20 lb propane tank is 80,000 BTU: the Outdoor GreatRoom Balsam Montego, Monte Carlo and Kenwood Linear Dining Height.

The short version

  • BTU is the gas a burner uses per hour, and it's the best single guide to how much heat a table gives off.
  • On a 20 lb tank, the ceiling in our range is 80,000 BTU. Every table we sell rated above that needs a fixed gas supply: natural gas, or propane plumbed from a large tank.
  • Size doesn't set the rating. A 32″ Dekko Serenade reaches 140,000 BTU; a 40″ Alea tops out at 90,000.
  • Ignition matters: the high ratings come with electronic or hi/low ignition, which also needs a 120V outdoor outlet.
  • More heat means more fuel: 225,000 BTU burns about 2.5 gallons of propane an hour at full flame.

What "hottest" actually means

A fire table's BTU rating is the amount of gas its burner consumes per hour at full flame, expressed as heat: 1 kilowatt is 3,412 BTU an hour. So a 65,000 BTU burner is using gas at the rate of about 19 kW, and a 225,000 BTU burner at about 66 kW. For comparison, a 1,500-watt plug-in space heater is about 5,100 BTU.

Outdoors, you don't feel all of that. Much of a flame's heat rises straight up with the hot gases; what reaches you is radiant heat from the flame and the glowing media, and it's strongest close to the table. That's why a higher rating makes a real difference on a cold night: there's simply more flame radiating at you. Two other things follow from how the ratings are set:

  • The burner sets the rating, not the table. The same Dekko Serenade is 65,000 BTU with match-lit ignition and 140,000 BTU with electronic ignition: it carries an 18″ burner in one configuration and a 24″ burner in the other.
  • A bigger table isn't automatically hotter. The 32″ Dekko Serenade 32 reaches 140,000 BTU; the 40″ Alea 40 tops out at 90,000.

BTU ratings are the manufacturers' published figures for each configuration. HPC and Dekko tables are ordered for one ignition and one fuel, and the rating depends on that choice; HPC's match-lit versions are rated 65,000 BTU. The OGR Cove 29 bowl (55,000 BTU) also runs from a fixed line. "Fixed line" means natural gas or propane piped from a permanent supply, installed by a licensed gas fitter.

Why tank tables top out at 80,000 BTU

Every table in our range rated above 80,000 BTU needs a fixed gas supply. That isn't a coincidence; it comes down to how much fuel a portable cylinder holds and what the burner makers certify.

The fuel arithmetic. Propane holds 91,452 BTU per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, and a full 20 lb cylinder holds about 4.7 gallons, or roughly 430,000 BTU. An 80,000 BTU table gets about five and a half hours from that at full flame. A 225,000 BTU burner would empty it in under two.

The certifications. The manufacturers decide which burners may run from a small tank, and they keep that to specific models:

  • Electronic ignition is fixed-piping only. Dekko's spec sheets say electronic-ignition burners require a fixed piping gas supply and are "not for use with portable LP tanks." HPC's copper-bowl manual lists the fuel supply as "fixed piping only."
  • Small-tank versions are the exception, not the rule. HPC's fire pit insert manual allows a small LP tank "only on select models," and its price list offers "small tank" versions only of particular match-lit and push-button kits. HPC hasn't published a small-tank rule for the Agni or Tejas tables, so we treat them as fixed-supply tables unless HPC confirms otherwise for the version you order.
  • Outdoor GreatRoom builds the tank into the design. Thirteen of the Outdoor GreatRoom tables we sell hide a standard 20 lb cylinder behind a door in the base, at 55,000 to 80,000 BTU.

On a 20 lb tank you can have 80,000 BTU. Run a gas line, and the same patio can have 225,000.

A fixed line has its own requirements. HPC's install manual makes the installer "responsible for using the correct fuel line sizing that can supply the stated maximum BTU," and electronic ignition needs a 120V outdoor outlet at the table. Our electronic ignition vs match lit guide covers the choice, and the fuel and ignition page lists every model's tank rule.

How much fuel the heat burns

Heat costs fuel in direct proportion. These are full-flame figures; turn the flame down and the use falls with it.

Calculated from the published BTU rating: propane at 91,452 BTU per gallon (EIA), natural gas at 100,000 BTU per therm. Tank times assume a full 20 lb cylinder of about 430,000 BTU; many exchange cylinders are filled with 15 lb, which cuts the time by about a quarter. Estimates, not manufacturer figures.

To put a price on it, multiply by what you pay. EIA's average for delivered residential propane was about $2.60 a gallon in early October 2026, which makes an hour at 80,000 BTU roughly $2.25 and an hour at 225,000 BTU roughly $6.40 on plumbed propane. Swapping or refilling 20 lb cylinders usually costs more per gallon than bulk delivery, and natural gas is billed per therm at your local rate.

Getting more warmth from any fire table

BTU is the big lever, but it isn't the only one. These are the ways to get more usable heat that the manufacturers themselves support:

1 · Keep the flame upright

Wind flattens a flame and carries its heat away. A tempered glass wind guard sized to the burner "reduces wind effect," in Outdoor GreatRoom's words.

2 · Choose hi/low control

Hi/low ignition lets you run full flame when it's cold and turn it down when it isn't, which also stretches the fuel.

3 · Match the shape to the seating

A long linear burner warms a sofa along its length; a round one suits a ring of chairs. Our size and shape guide goes through it.

4 · Use media as directed

Follow the manual on media: HPC's says to apply lava rock "ONLY deep enough to cover burner," and never to cover the vents.

What about heat deflectors? They're a popular add-on. We don't sell one for any table in our range. Anything that sits over or in the flame changes how a certified burner behaves, so check with the burner's manufacturer before adding one, and never light an Outdoor GreatRoom table with its glass burner cover in place, which the manuals forbid outright. If a table isn't warm enough, a higher-rated burner is the manufacturer-supported answer.

More heat, same clearances?

Clearances are set per burner, so check the manual for the exact model. For HPC fire pits up to 142,000 BTU, HPC's install manual calls for 84″ of overhead clearance and 36″ from the sides to any structure or combustible material (12″ if it's noncombustible). The Dekko tables are permitted at 84″ overhead with solid structure on no more than two sides. Above 142,000 BTU, up to 250,000, HPC publishes a separate clearance drawing, so check that one for the Agni 60 and Tejas. Outdoor GreatRoom's Crystal Fire Plus burner manual calls for 72″ above the burner and 24″ to combustible side walls. Our overhead clearance guide explains how to measure your space.

The hottest table for your situation

Prices below are live from each product page. Where a table is sold in several configurations, the range runs from the match-lit version to the top-rated one.

Want 80,000 BTU on a tank for less? The Balsam Montego has the same 12″ × 42″ burner at $1,899. For a round bowl on a gas line at 105,000 BTU, look at the Cove 42 at $4,199, and for a smaller steel round, the Agni 48 reaches 140,000 BTU at $3,648.25–$6,516.30. The 60″ Dekko Avera 60 matches the Sonoma 72's 150,000 BTU at $5,416.20–$7,610.70.

Before you order — the short list

  • Decide your gas supply first. A 20 lb tank caps you at 80,000 BTU in our range; a gas line opens up 90,000 to 225,000.
  • Electronic ignition needs power: a 120V outdoor outlet at the table, as well as fixed piping.
  • Size the gas line to the burner. HPC makes the installer responsible for a line that can supply the table's maximum BTU. Use a licensed gas fitter.
  • Check clearances for the exact burner: overhead, sides and what's underneath.
  • Add a wind guard if your patio catches the breeze, sized to the burner.

Tell us how you'll fuel it, where it's going and how warm you want to be, and we'll point you at the hottest table that will work there.

Hottest propane fire pit FAQ

What is the hottest propane fire pit table?
Of the tables we sell, the HPC Agni 60 at up to 225,000 BTU, on a fixed gas line. The hottest that runs from a hidden 20 lb tank is 80,000 BTU: the Outdoor GreatRoom Balsam Montego, Monte Carlo and Kenwood Linear Dining Height.
How many BTU should a fire pit table have?
More BTU means more radiant heat. The hidden-tank tables we sell are 55,000–80,000 BTU; tables on a gas line in our range reach 90,000–225,000 BTU with electronic ignition.
Do propane fire pits actually give off heat?
Yes, as radiant heat that's strongest close to the table; much of the flame's heat rises. More BTU, a wind guard and seating as close as the manual's clearances allow all help.
Can a high-BTU fire pit run on a 20 lb tank?
Not in our range. A full 20 lb cylinder holds about 430,000 BTU, so a 225,000 BTU burner would empty it in under two hours, and only specific match-lit and push-button models are certified for small tanks. Every table we sell above 80,000 BTU needs a fixed gas supply.
How much propane does a fire table use per hour?
At full flame: about 0.6 gallons at 55,000 BTU, 0.87 at 80,000, 1.64 at 150,000 and 2.46 at 225,000. A lower flame uses proportionally less.
Do heat deflectors work on fire tables?
We don't sell them for any table in our range. Anything placed over the flame changes how a certified burner behaves, so ask the burner's manufacturer first. A higher-rated burner, hi/low control and a wind guard are the supported ways to get more heat.

BTU ratings, ignition options, tank rules and clearances are the manufacturers' published specifications and owner's-manual guidance for the models we sell; they vary by model and configuration, so confirm against the product page and manual before ordering. Fuel use, tank times and costs are estimates calculated from the BTU rating and EIA figures, not manufacturer figures. Fixed gas connections, line sizing and natural-gas conversions must be done by a licensed gas fitter to local code. Never use or store a propane cylinder in a building, garage or enclosed area.
